چکیده

We consider coalition formation problems for agents with an underlying synergistic graph, where edges between agents represent some vital synergistic link, such as communication, trust, or physical constraints. A coalition is infeasible if its members do not form a connected subgraph, meaning parts of the coalition are isolated from others. Current state-of-the-art coalition formation algorithms are not designed for problems over synergistic graphs. They assume that all coalitions are feasible and so involve redundant computation when this is not the case. Accordingly, we propose algorithms, namely D-SlyCE and DyCE, to enumerate all feasible coalitions in a distributed fashion and find the optimal feasible coalition structure respectively. When evaluated on a variety of synergistic graphs, D-SlyCE is up to 660 times faster while DyCE is up to 7 × 10 times faster than the state-of-the-art algorithms. For particular classes of graphs, D-SlyCE is the first to enumerate valid coalition values for up to 50 agents and DyCE is the first algorithm to find the optimal coalition structure for up to 30 agents in minutes as opposed to months for previous algorithms.

Coalition Formation in Games without synergies

This paper establishes sufficient conditions for the existence of a stable coalition structure in the ”coalition unanimity” game of coalition formation, first defined by Hart and Kurz (1983) and more recently studied by Yi (1997, 2000). Our conditions are defined on the strategic form game used to derive the payoffs of the game of coalition formation. We show that if no synergies are generated ...

Fractional hedonic games

An important issue in multi-agent systems is the exploitation of synergies via coalition formation. We initiate the formal study of fractional hedonic games. In fractional hedonic games, the utility of a player in a coalition structure is the average value he ascribes to the members of his coalition. Among other settings, this covers situations in which there are several types of agents and eac...

Challenges in Distributed Coalition Formation among Collaborative Multi-Agent Systems: An Experimental Case Study on Small-World Networks

We study collaborative multi-agent coalition formation in a fully decentralized, resource-bounded setting. In that context, we analyze, simulate and optimize Maximal Clique based Distributed Coalition Formation (MCDCF) algorithm. We continue our experimental, simulation-based investigation of MCDCF performance on types of underlying graphs that various research communities find important. In pa...

Distributed Graph-Partitioning based Coalition Formation for Collaborative Multi-Agent Systems Some Lessons Learned and Challenges Ahead

We study algorithms for distributed collaborative multi-agent coalition formation. The focus of our recent and ongoing research has been on coalition formation via scalable distributed graph partitioning of the underlying agents’ communication network topology. In that endeavor, we have been analyzing, simulating and optimizing our original graph partitioning algorithm called Maximal Clique bas...

Complexity of constructing solutions in the core based on synergies among coalitions

Coalition formation is a key problem in automated negotiation among selfinterested agents, and other multiagent applications. A coalition of agents can sometimes accomplish things that the individual agents cannot, or can accomplish them more efficiently. Motivating the agents to abide by a solution requires careful analysis: only some of the solutions are stable in the sense that no group of a...
